Chinese Tutor ("we", "us", "our") operates chinesetutor.app, a Mandarin language learning application. This policy explains what data we collect when you use the app, why we collect it, and your rights over it.
We collect only what is necessary to make the app work and improve over time. We do not sell your personal data.
1. Data We Collect
Account When you create an account we collect your email address and a hashed password. Your email is used for authentication and to send a welcome message. We do not share it with advertisers.
Microphone Tone-training features require access to your device's microphone. We do not record, store, or transmit your voice to our servers. Pitch data is analyzed to provide our services.
Learning data We store your drill results, tone scores, vocabulary progress, and session history so you can track improvement over time. This data is tied to your account and kept in our database.
Usage & analytics We use third-party hosted analytical services to understand how the app is used — page views, feature usage, session duration, and user paths. These services use cookies and may collect your IP address. You can opt out of the browser add-on here. An additional provider's privacy policy is available here.
AI interactions When you use AI-powered tutoring features, your text input (and in some features, your tone-score data) is sent to a third-party AI provider to generate a response. We do not send your email address or account ID to this provider. Data handling is governed by their privacy policy.
2. Cookies
We use the following cookies:
- Authentication cookie — keeps you logged in (session-scoped, deleted when you log out).
- Analytics cookies — aggregate usage tracking set by our third-party analytical services. These persist across sessions unless cleared.
We do not use advertising, retargeting, or third-party tracking cookies beyond analytical services and authentication.
3. How We Use Your Data
- Authenticate you and maintain your account
- Store and display your learning progress
- Generate tone scores and personalized drill content
- Provide AI tutoring responses via a third-party AI provider
- Understand aggregate usage to improve the app
- Send transactional emails (e.g., welcome email, password reset)
We do not use your data for advertising profiles, do not sell or rent it, and do not share it with third parties except as described in this policy.
4. Data Storage & Security
User data is stored with a third-party, U.S.-based provider. All data is securely transmitted. We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days.
5. Children's Privacy
Chinese Tutor is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete the data promptly.
6. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and associated data
- Export your learning history in a portable format
- Withdraw consent for microphone use at any time via your browser settings

7. Changes to This Policy
